Catch and Canvas

What is Gyotaku?

Gyotaku, or Fish Rubbing, is a traditional Japanese art form dating back over a century. Non-toxic ink is applied to the fish, and rice paper is gently rubbed to capture its image. Captain Ross combines authentic traditional methods with modern techniques. Since non-toxic ink is used, your catch can be safely cleaned and enjoyed.

How it works

Step 1: So, you want to get your catch printed? - Reach out to Captain Ross and let him know! If you catch a trophy on an after-work trip, reach out as soon as you're sure you want it printed. However, planning a print well before a trip or charter ensures the best availability. If you book a print but come back empty-handed, don't worry! There are no upfront charges or fees. Step 2: You caught a fish you want to memorialize! - Congratulations on your catch! At this stage, Captain Ross has you scheduled and will be waiting for you at the boat ramp! Capt. Ross will print the fish. Depending on the fish and initial prints, usually 2-4 prints are taken, and the best one will be chosen for finishing touches. Capt. Ross will then clean your fish, literally and figuratively. He'll clean the non-toxic ink off the fish and then fillet it.

Step 3: Review and decide 🤔 - Now that you have your fish fillets and initial prints, you have a choice to make. If you choose a print, Capt. Ross will price it out and provide an invoice. The print will be taken back to the studio where he will add agreed details and finishing touches. It will then be available for pick-up or shipped home once finished.

What if I don't like how the initial prints came out?

Once Capt. Ross has finished crying for not meeting your expectations, there is still no obligation to purchase*. Only after you have reviewed the initial prints and agreed on a print to be finalized in the studio are the sales final. If you decline keeping a print, you still keep your cleaned fish at no additional cost.
